Mail-Client Configuration
We have created the following guides to help you setup your email client please choose your mail client
below to access the tutorial:
- Sendmail/PHP:
The path to sendmail on our servers is /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail
Sending Email via ByteHosting Servers
ByteHosting SMTP servers require authentication in order to allow remote
machines to send email (relay) via them. In order to send email, your mail
client must be capable of using SMTP-AUTH. In most mail clients this generally
just means clicking the 'This server requires authentication' checkbox.
NOTE: Make enable smtp authentication but disable 'Secure Password Authentication (SPA)'.
SPA authentication is for Microsoft Windows™/Exchange™ Servers, our
mailservers are UNIX™.
For security reasons we do NOT implement 'POP-b4-AUTH' technology. You are required
to authenticate if you want to send messages to domains outside of our network.
Managing your E-mail
Go to qmailadmin and log in to your account. Leave the POP
account as postmaster to administer your entire domain. Enter the domain
name you want to work with. Your password is the same one you use for
checking your mail. Once you're in, you've got a bunch of options:
Pop Accounts
These are actual mailboxes where users can receive e-mail, and read it
with any mail client (like Netscape, Microsoft Outlook, etc.), or with
sqwebmail. Users log into their POP box by specifying the e-mail address
as the username and the password you assign.
To set up a POP account, click on Add a Pop User. Enter the Pop Account
name (the corresponding e-mail address will be
accountname@yourdomain.com). Enter your desired
password in both fields. Then enter your real name and click the add
account button.
Aliases
It's sometimes useful to have more than one e-mail address feed into
the same POP account. For example if you have a POP account
joe@mydomain.com and you'd like him to also receive e-mail sent to
sales@mydomain.com, set up an alias to do this.
When the screen comes up just enter the new name (eg. sales) and the
POP box you want it to fall into, and click Add.
Forward Address
Forwards are essentially aliases that link mail to an offsite e-mail
account. For example, you could use a forward to have mail sent to
support@mydomain.com be routed to joe5678@myemail.com.
When you are adding a new forward, the Forward Email Address is the
offsite e-mail account, and the Local Name is the address within your
domain.
Mailing list
These basically work like forwards, except that they send the message
to an entire list of addresses instead of just one. Mail lists are great
for a list of clients, a newsletter, or anything where you need to send
mail to a group of people.
To add a mailing list click the New Mail List button, enter the name of
your desired mailing list and press add. After that, you're back to the
main menu where you can add subscribers, remove subscribers, or delete or
show everyone who is subscribed. To add a subscriber just click the little
yellow dot icon in your mailing list section and enter their e-mail
address and press add. Same for delete except enter their e-mail and press
delete! You can always click on Show Subscribers to be sure you added
everyone you wanted.
